Résumé

This case study of contractors / trains are always late seeks to understand the discourse functions of generics with an exaggerating predicate (always does not mean “without exceptions” here). It finds that the strings do not just convey annoyance at a negative experience. They are also found in more theoretical advice, for promotional strategies, or to argue about other topics through comparison. The data also show that the strings are language stereotypes, available with an exaggerating value even when the immediate context has nuanced statements. Finally, the data show major differences between a human and an inanimate subject: possible shift to a value judgment for humans, more complex stakes, and crucial role of the contrast between in- and out-group.
