Abstract

Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) refers to methods used to enable people with Complex Communication Needs (CCN) to participate in social interactions in their daily life (Beukelman & Mirenda 2017). This literature review lists the criteria that underpin the choice of AAC methods. We highlight the multimodal and interactional nature of AAC and the possibility to combine methods. We restrict our review to emerging communicators with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities (PIMD).
