Abstract

The aim of this paper is to describe some particular uses of the French pronoun ça, which is not always the informal equivalent of cela, since they cannot both commute in every context. Indeed, in three cases such as: il est plus gros que ça ('it is bigger than this'); qui ça? ('who did you say?'); faire ci et ça ('to do this and that'), it cannot be decided if ça is still a pronoun or if it adds emphasis to a sentence.
