Abstract

In this paper, we want to defend the necessity and to illustrate the possibility of a harmonization of the grammatical terminology in Europe. The grammatical metalanguage shows considerable divergences from one language to another. The sources of this heterogeneity are manyfold but a new reflection on the function and minimal requirements of a grammatical terminology should make it possible to elaborate at least a nucleus of common terminology for the wordclasses and grammatical functions in the European languages. We illustrate this point with four concrete examples: the noun phrase, the object complements, the clause types and the invariable wordclasses.
